a petite feature

some weeks ago this little package arrived from Norge...

MARTE MARIE FORSBERG

the story behind her work

this white seashell necklace made by Marte Marie Forsberg became my favorite.

and Marie became a dear friend :)

Life is a journey, and my journey has taken me more than full circle.

I grew up in a very loving and creative family that has always supported my many ideas.

No matter what I pursued, they were right there next to me cheering me on, telling me I could do it.

Both my parents are entrepreneurs and very creative. My dad started out as a classical painter and

became a successful businessman, public speaker and mentor. My mother has worked all her life

with designing textiles, weaving, costumes, knitting, crocheting. She’s an excellent cook and has the

most enchanting garden. I practically grew up in her atelier.

With all this in my basket, I wanted to go out to the world and explore, to see for myself, and to

figure out what I wanted to do. And of course, it would be way different than my parents…

Well, let me tell you, after years of working as a flight attendant for Scandinavian airlines, freelance

writing for different newspapers and magazines, studying Arabic, art history and fashion design,

and living in places like Tokyo, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, France and Italy, I came to

America to finish up my art history degree.

There I met my love, and the puzzle pieces started to come together.

Today, I pursue my dream as a designer and stylist.

I work on a my designs, a book project with my mother,

and I run the blog Le voyage Créatif, working from San Francisco and Norway.

I’ve gone full circle.

I love waking up in the morning full of ideas that has been brewing in my mind over night.

I’m currently working on a small mother-daughter collection with simple wardrobe basics in Italian

linen, with a joint limited edition jewelry collection made from repurposed denim, canvas, wood,

leather and soft cotton coming out early next year.

I believe that if we listen, life has a way of bringing us home, even if the world can be wonderfully

distracting at times. I could not imagine doing anything else than what I do today, except more of it!

To me, that is living la dolce vita ;)

random favorites

this paragraph from Sarah Jane sums up my thoughts about this really well:

PROTECTING YOUR ART, IDEAS, COMPOSITIONS AND STYLE

Doesn’t copyright protect my idea and composition?

No. Art and craft is so subjective, and ideas really can’t be copyrighted.

Here is what the US copyright office has to say:

“Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something.

You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description,

but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work.”

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-protect.html

What can I do when I see someone else coming up with creations obviously similar to mine?

I would love to here your reaction to this, but here is mine. Contact the artist if necessary telling them

you are noticing some copying going on. If they still persist, contact them again if you feel you need to.

But for me, this is where I stop. You are an ARTIST! You are not a huge million dollar company protecting

your branded and patented products. You are just one person with a ba-jillion creative ideas constantly going

through your brain. To waste your creative energy by going after a copycat is a waste of that creative energy.

Why?

You are the original creative idea, and have power to always rise above the competition.

Competition is good and will most always be there. You can spend your time getting angry, or you can spend

your time staying ahead of the game by keeping your art fresh, lively and cutting edge. Most likely if someone

is copying you, it isn’t going to be as good as yours nor will it have the LIFE of the BREATH of your creative-

from-your-own-gut creation. So leave them alone, and focus on how you can make your creations new and

fresh and always ahead of the market.

This leads me to another point:

Keep your own sources fresh and honest. Never let yourself copy another artist’s style unless of course you

are using that as a way to learn new techniques and educate yourself. Copying is a good thing for learning

how to verse your hand in various art forms and styles. But your work should then take what you learn to a

new level, always allowing your own voice to come through. When you choose to copy art as your primary

resource, it will be FLAT and will lack the LIFE that really great images require. Don’t let yourself fall into that

trap! The moment you are trying to make your creations look like someone else’s, your art will most likely be

easy to copy itself. Remember, there was only ONE Rembrandt. He had MANY students, and to this day,

experts can’t tell which was a true Rembrandt and which is a student’s hand on a select few paintings.

But regardless, there was only one Rembrandt. Do people remember the copycat? No. They never will.

Be fresh and mark your own path.

Don’t let yourself be a follower.

...

has it happened to you that there’s someone constantly monitoring your work

and copying it as well as your ideas? yes, it is annoying.

all of a sudden they have book projects and photo stories and bookmarks, etc.

that they’ve thought about doing since last year. right.

it’s not nice to find out they’re not only copying your style but also the way you choose to photograph

your shop products, using the same materials -like feathers or nature elements with the prints-

clearly trying to imitate the same atmosphere. why can’t they find their own path?

why can’t they forget about you and what you do?

unfortunately they don’t seem to realize they’re not being themselves

and know nothing about respect. they’ve just become your follower, a stalker.

here are some articles I’ve found today, and apparently it’s like an “online epidemia” :)
